It is September! I love Fall!

I love living in Idaho in the Fall.

We have amazingly beautiful Indian Summers.

We put our fall decorations up yesterday and it is magical with the swish of a color how it loves the it has a lovely ambience that comes with Fall.

A couple of years ago I pulled out all my stuff that has been hiding in boxes, jewelry, dishes, hankies etc that belong to ancestors of mine. I divided it into colors of the holidays and put in the decorations I have for that time of year. When you see splashes of fabric, jewelry, dishes etc in the decor, they are things that belonged to my mom, my grandmother's and great grandmother's on both sides.

Stacking Trays

I love doing this stacking tray each fall. Little scarecrows are in it for Fall. Candles, leaves and picks fill in the empty spaces. There are also pieces of my mom's jewelry that are the right colors. (She passed away several years ago.)

At Halloween I replace them with cute little ghosts and witches. At Thanksgiving little pilgrims and turkeys.

Step #1 - I don't have enough variable size cake plates to make this so I have used 3 different sized trays and ice cream glasses. They work great! Then stack them largest to smallest. I have a tiny bowl in the top tray tha tthe scarecrow sits in - it elevates him a bit.

Step #2 - Gather all your odd's and end's fall stuff that is small. (Candles, leaves, picks, jewelry, etc) Lots my stuff were things I would maybe throw away.

Step #3 - Put your main pieces in first then fill in with all your fall stuff.

These are the different trays close up.It is easy, quick and fun!

I have a new feddish- some may call it a sickness - it is Cloches

- everything I see that could be a cloche has become a cloche.

Since the last Cloche party (which was my first one) I have turned into a cloche freak.

I am still a beginner - but this is fun!!!

Can I count this as a cloche? It is lovely! Brightens up my entire kitchen corner.

It was 28* at my house last night, the scarecrows are all dusted off and the apple cider is brewing! I love fall! It is my favorite outside season of the year. The gardening is coming to a close, the leaves are so perfect to walk in and the colors are amazing.

This and the next few posts are a few ways we celebrate fall.

Welcome to our Home! Just smell that pumpkin spice candle burning!To your left is the living room and to your right is the hall to the kitchen and dining room.This is one of the dining room bookselves - bursting with fall! My grandmother's and great grandmother's dishes used to bepacked away and no one able to enjoy them. This shelf is filled with these fall colored heirloom dishes in tribute to them - they epitomized the "Fall Season." They were thrifty, resourceful, hard workers, yet always nurturing, welcoming and warm. In the living room this is the top of the piano.
This is the mantle shown in a previous post. This picture shows a couple of the wreaths hanging.
The next few posts show a few of the fun activities we do in Idaho in the WONDER-FALL!

Wonderful Months of Fall!

In the fall our ancestors were preparing for the long winter months ahead during Harvest time. They were preserving food, making quilts, patching roofs and houses, gathering herbs for medicine and making sure all was in order for the winter. Here are some ideas for harvest activities you can do with the children in your life:

Harvest Dinner – Make a harvest dinner with the produce from your garden. It would be a fun night to have a family party and eat your dinner by a fire and enjoy a beautiful fall evening.

Quilts – Tie some quilts. They could all be the same so everyone has a matching blanket or do it in favorite colors. You could also do it for a service to give to someone in need.

Wonder-Fall Fun:

Fall Drive - Go and enjoy the changing leaves. All you need for your afternoon adventure are some jackets, snacks, water and bags to store treasures found. A picnic always makes it more to enjoy the tastes of fall. Hot chocolate or cider and some chili or stew in a thermos make a great fall picnic meal. Be sure and take your camera!

Once you get home you can turn those gathered fun fall treasures into lasting colorful memories.

Preserve a leaf – Mix 2 parts water and 1 part glycerin in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Pour solution into a heatproof container and submerge a few leaves, using a wooden spoon. Keep container in a dark place until the leaves tints change a bit. Remove and blot dry. They will stay bright and not go crumbly.

Leaf Notebook - Use a guidebook to identify leaves you have gathered. Be sure to add whom you were with, where you were at and even a picture of two of you collecting leaves with your grandchild.

Leaf Rubbing – Place a leaf under plain paper. Gently use crayons and rub over the leaf. You can use different sizes, shapes and grouping of leaves to create different pictures. Add to your notebook if desired.

Fall Placemat – You will need 2 pieces of clear contact paper 18 inches long each. Arrange what you want to put into your mat. A picture(s) of the day would be fun with leaves all around it. Take the backing off the fist piece and transfer your design to it. Then take the backing off the second piece and cover to seal. Trim the edges with straight or fancy scissors.

Sun catcher. Iron leaves between 2 pieces of wax paper on a low setting. Trim around the leaves about 1 inch. Make several leaves, punch a hole in the end and tie a string. Join several to make a mobile or hang them one at a time.

Front Porch – Decorate your front porch to welcome fall. Make a scarecrow. Stuff an old shirt until it is firm. Add overalls or jeans and tie with a twine belt and stuff until firm. Complete it with a pumpkin with a face painted on it and an old hat. Set him up on a bench or chair. Add some orange colored lights and you have a welcoming fall porch for your visitors.

Doughnuts in Idaho!

Nutty About Doughnuts!

Mention doughnuts and even the health nuts say yum! No one knows for sure how the hole in the middle began, but one legend is that it was hard to cook all the way through.

Idaho Spud nuts

1 pound russet potatoes boiled (reserve ½ cup potato water from cooking)

2 packages yeast

1 ½ cup warm milk (110* to 115*)

½ cup vegetable oil

½ cup sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

1 teaspoon salt

7 to 7 ½ cups flour

Oil for deep-frying

The glaze:

4 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup water

1 teaspoon vanilla

Mash potatoes in a large mixing bowl. Dissolve yeast in ½ cup warm potato water. Mix potatoes, milk, yeast, oil, sugar, eggs, and slat. Add enough flour to make soft dough. Place in a greased bowl, cover and put in warm place and let rise until doubled about 25 minutes. Roll onto floured surface to ½ inch thickness. Cut with floured doughnut cutter or you can use a glass and a water bottle lid for the middle. Heat oil to 375 * Fry doughnuts a few at a time until golden brown. Combine ingredients for glaze and dip warm doughnuts in glaze or you can dip in granulated sugar or frost. Cool on wire racks. Makes 4 dozen.

An Apple A Day!

Warm afternoons, cool nights, crisp mornings, pumpkin picking, Carmel corn, apple cider, state fairs, corn maize’s and apples on the ground…. it is fall! You will have a bushel of fun with these "a-peeling" activities you can do with the children in your life.

Apple Stamps – Cover your work area with newspaper. Cut an apple horizontally. Dip cut apple into fabric or acrylic paint and stamp a t-shirt, pillowcase, paper, or whatever you want to have stamped. Use the stamp as the base of your design and use a paintbrush or fabric pen to add details to turn it into a dog, a ladybug, or any creation you want. Use one-half apple per color of paint. Be creative and have fun!

Apple Candle Sticks – You will need large apples, newspaper, candles, potato peeler and lemon juice. Make a hole about halfway through the middle of an apple with a potato peeler, Carve designs in the skin of the apple with the tip of the potato peeler and rub with lemon juice to keep designs from turning brown. Insert a candle into the hole, it if doesn’t’ fit tightly, wrap tin foil or wax paper around the base, Place on a small plate to display.

Apple Games – A great family card game to add to your collection is Apples to Apples to play with your grandchildren. Have an apple pie eating contest. Hang some apples to the ceiling on string and see who can eat theirs the fastest without using their hands. Apple bobbing contest. With smaller children you can play, "Pin the worm on the apple."

Apple Stories – There are several stories, which feature an apple as one of the main characters, such as William Tell, Snow White, Hercules and the Wizard of Oz. Most of these are available in movie form, also the movie Enchanted.

Some yummy apple treats:

Applesauce – You will need 12 apples, 1 cup water, ½ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Wash and core the apples. Place in pan and cover with water. Cook over medium heat until apples are soft. Add sugar and lemon juice. Cook about 3 minutes longer then puree in blender. Makes 5 cups applesauce.

Carmel Apples – You will need 1 ½ tablespoon butter, 1 ½ cup light brown sugar, 6 Tablespoons water, sticks and 8 to 10 apples. Melt butter in a saucepan, Add brown sugar and water. Stir until smooth. Gently bring to a boil and simmer for 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Pierce the center of each apple with a stick then swirl in the Carmel syrup until coated. You can add faces with candy, sprinkles, and gummy worms or roll in marshmallows, peanuts or cold cereal. Place apples on a greased cookie sheet to harden. Refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours. Serves 8-10.

Baked Apples – Preheat oven to 350*. Take out core of apple but leave a little bit at the bottom to make a deep hole. Add 2 Tablespoons brown sugar and 1 tablespoon butter. Place in shallow baking dish and sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Top with whipped cream, Store in sealed container.

Toilet Paper Pumpkin

I made these 4-5 years ago for gifts for people in my church group. They were fast, inexpensive and fun!

You can use any fabric you choose - I got about 6 pumpkins per yard. I cut the fabric into 18 inch squares then rounded the corners to get rid of bulk. Place your tp in the middle and gather it up evenly, then stuff it in the top of the roll. This is how the bottom looks.

Add some ivy leaves - they look like the pumpkin leaves in my garden and you are done.

Even though you cant' see it in the photo, I brushed the outside of the pumpkin with an irridescent glitter glue - add's a lot of character.

Nestled in the pumpkin patch on my fireplace hearth!

What a Great Pumpkin Centerpiece!

I have lots of pumpkins in my garden and candles in my basement. What a fun centerpiece!

Supplies
Medium-size pumpkin
6-inch pillar candle
Sprigs of bittersweet, preserved leaves, vines, or artificial berries
Sharp knife
Marker
Instructions
Snap or cut the stem off the top of the pumpkin. Placing the bottom end of the pillar candle on the top of the pumpkin, tightly trace the perimeter of the candle's bottom with a marker.
Using a sharp knife, cut vertically just inside the traced outline. The cut portion can then be discarded.
Wedge the candle securely inside. If you've cut the hole a bit too large, simply place a can or other object inside the pumpkin as a base for the candle. If necessary, keep the candle from tipping by wedging one end of a vine in between the candle and the cut edge.

A Few Fall Decrations In Our Home - 2008

I love to decorate our home for the seasons.
I have realized this is one of my hobby's. I learn so much from doing it and it is such a great feeling to create and change things all around us.
I have just put up the fall decorations. A little sad this year, because it is the first year I have done it alone. Three of our daughters got married in the past 12 months and they were my helpers.I am not sure what Christmas Decorating is going to be like! Poor Mitch, he is going to have to be my helper! Shhhhhh he doesn't know it yet.There are more pictures at the bottom of the blog with the fall decorations in our home.

Centerpiece on the entry room table

This little scarecrow was made about 20 years ago. The kids all helped.
He is practically a member of the famly!Spray over kitchen sink.This shelf is over the dining room couch. It is filled with pots and other kitchen utensils that belonged to my grandmothers. I have had these treasures hiding in boxes and closets for years. Last year I decided I wanted them out on display. So depending on their color they get put in a matching season to be a part of the display.
